About "Pure and Simple":
The ultimate truth always comes in a pure and simple form. My aim was
to express a pure experience and uncategorized feelings about our surroundings.
The imagery is meant to be a simple observation without commentary. It
is left to the viewer to freely associate it with a concrete interpretation, which is
probably the fear of crime for some sensitive South African viewers. The observed are
embarking on a free, even random, movement with no beginning nor ending. (Note that titles
of the work were produced by randomly generated alphabets and decimal numbers.) Meanwhile
the road signs or security signs around are indicative of some imposed rules delimiting
the scope of freedom, which may or may not matter for the moving figures.
One possible effect is that a viewer may experience the joy of the
ostensibly free soul contrasted with the invisible hands of a Big Brother at the same
time.
This is purely and simply the reality of our universe. |
